I Call This Abandonment

“This could be a gun pointed at me,
Should I move or should I take this?” – Chasing Victory

I guess I never understood what this meant until a couple days ago, and now it won’t leave my mind. I am in love with absolutely everything about this song.

I would have to say that any struggle in my relationship with God ultimately comes down to: choosing something of the earth over something of God. I really can’t think of a struggle that doesn’t apply to that. With our stupid human brains, it is extraordinarily difficult to grasp anything that we can’t see or touch.

The things in our lives that come between us and Him are unacceptable. There is nothing even worthy of being compared to God, let alone replace Him. Idols, or whatever you want to call those things in your life, are just guns pointed to your head. They lead to nowhere but death, an eternal death.

But there is a choice. When there is a gun up to your head, you really have two options. You could:

a) Try to take the bullet. That would be considered nonsense however, because there is no way for you to keep the bullet from killing you.

or

b) Run away from the bullet. It’s the only logical thing to do.

Of course, in a physical example it is obvious what we would do. Because quite frankly, getting shot in the head would suck. Then why would we take a spiritual bullet and allow these things that hurt us into our lives? Why would we ever let something get in-between us and God?

“No one can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other.” – Matthew 6:24

“And you will perish, too, unless you repent of your sins and turn to God.” – Luke 13:3

God calls us to flee from sin. He calls us to completely turn around and run away from it. But it keeps drawing us back in. We have two options, and we know the outcomes of each. Now it is up to us.
